I didn't have the money to buy a ukulele, so it was a back-burner type of idea for a while. I even found one online that I liked, but didn't get it. Matt got it for me as a gift, and I was super excited! It is cute and little. Now all I had to do was learn to play it.
Matt plays the guitar, and when we were newlyweds, he tried teaching me some guitar. I could do a couple of chords, but it was hard for me to play. My hands are on the smaller side, and it's hard to stretch my fingers to play the guitar. I figured a ukulele was smaller, so maybe it would be easier for my smaller hands.
I started searching for YouTube videos, tutorials, and ukulele tab websites. It wasn't easy, but it was fun! I enjoyed figuring it out. I admit that I did have this expectation that I would be able to pick it up no problem. I probably have picked up a lot of it pretty easily, but there has been a bit that hasn't been easy. I got frustrated. I've had to work hard at piano, but most of it came very naturally, and this wasn't. I kinda kept putting it aside quite a few times as I became frustrated with my pace.
I would have to remind myself that this was something new, and I have to take my time. I had a day when I realized that I kept trying for songs that were too hard for me. I could do it roughly, but I'm not quite in a place with the skill to fluidly play these songs yet. That was the most helpful thought! I scaled back and started looking for songs for beginners.
Once I accepted that I am actually, truly, a beginner, I started having progress! I could play the ukulele well once I looked for songs within my current expertise. It got more fun and more enjoyable. I am now loving the ukulele, and I can now play five songs! I'll come back to those harder songs someday, but for now, I'm going to enjoy the skill level that I'm at. Beginner.
