One huge problem I had with it was my physical health. I've had crappy health since I turned 20. My back has problems, as well as my hips, feet, wrists, you name it, it tends to hurt. Standing for hours on end killed me off, and I could hardly walk across the room once I got done with work. It was easy to let go of. I didn't fully love the work that I did either. I liked the people I would meet, but I think I didn't feel confident in my work, and that made it hard for me to enjoy it.
What I do appreciate from cosmetology is my knowledge and skills with hair. It has come in very handy! It's nice to save money on haircuts for the family, and if you know who my son is, you know that I have put my cosmetology skills to good use! I am braiding his hair once or twice a month, and it is an all-day event. I have saved us a lot of money by being able to style his hair alone.
I used to fix my daughter's hair in extravagant hairstyles almost daily until she hit the point where she didn't like what I chose to do. Now she does her own hair mainly. I kinda miss getting to fix her hair. It was a creative outlet I really enjoyed.
Last summer, I got tired of fixing my hair the exact same way all the time. I decided that I was going to try out 40 new hairstyles. I found hairstyles to try on Pinterest and started trying them out. It was actually really fun! I don't spend a whole lot of time on my hair generally, so last summer was a little different. It took me a while to figure out some hairstyles, but I had fun giving them a shot.
I started choosing hairstyles that I would not normally wear, and sometimes I felt a little vulnerable going out and about with a hairstyle that was different for me. They weren't bad, but just outside of my norm. It was also kinda exciting to try a new look. Why not rocker chick?
I was also getting better at skills that I hadn't used for a long time. I felt like my schooling had a purpose for me personally. It is useful for others, but to work on developing it for my sake was rewarding. It really was just fun to try out something new and feel a little different!
